Hydroxyl Generator

An odor-control machine that uses UV-driven hydroxyl radicals to break down smoke and odor compounds, often while drying or cleaning continues.

A hydroxyl generator is an odor-control tool used in restoration after smoke, sewage, and other odor-heavy losses. It uses UV light and a catalyst to create hydroxyl radicals that react with odor compounds and help break them down over time.

The practical advantage is that hydroxyl treatment can often run in more occupied-adjacent settings than ozone, though every job still needs safety and manufacturer guidance. Like every deodorization tool, it works best after source removal: clean the soot, remove contaminated porous materials, dry the structure, then treat the remaining odor pathways.

On an estimate, hydroxyl processing may appear as equipment time. The reason is simple: odor reduction is a process, not a spray. The machine needs exposure time and airflow to reach the affected air and surfaces.

The comparison homeowners usually ask about is hydroxyl versus ozone. Both break down odor compounds; the practical difference is aggressiveness versus flexibility. Ozone works faster but requires a fully vacated, sealed space and can degrade rubber, elastics, and some finishes. Hydroxyl runs slower but gentler, which is why it's often the choice when work crews are still in the building or when contents can't tolerate ozone exposure. Neither replaces source removal.

Expect hydroxyl units to run for days rather than hours on a meaningful smoke loss, often alongside air scrubbers — the generator breaks down odor compounds while HEPA filtration captures the particulate that carries them.
