While you're there: unplug the pump and clear the pit of sediment and debris (float switches jam on gravel and children's toys with equal enthusiasm), confirm the check valve on the discharge line is oriented correctly and holding (water shouldn't pour back into the pit when the pump stops), and follow the discharge line outside to make sure it daylights well away from the foundation and isn't crushed, clogged, or — in a cold snap — frozen solid.
How often, and when, should I do this?
Test quarterly, with two non-negotiable dates: early fall before the Pacific Northwest rainy season arrives in earnest, and midwinter ahead of the biggest storm stretches. Pumps that sat idle all summer are exactly the ones that seize when October delivers the first real load.

Do I need a battery backup sump pump?
