What are mycotoxins?

Mycotoxins are naturally occurring chemical compounds produced by some molds. They're best understood and most clearly consequential in the context of contaminated food and agriculture, where ingesting mycotoxin-contaminated crops in quantity is a well-documented health hazard studied for decades. That's the solid ground: mycotoxins exist, some are toxic, and eating moldy contaminated food can be harmful.

Whether a given mold produces mycotoxins depends on the species and on growth conditions — not every mold makes them, and not always. So the presence of mold does not automatically mean the presence of mycotoxins, and a dark mold on a wall is not, by that fact alone, releasing toxins into your air.

What does the science actually establish about home exposure?

Why do 'toxic mold' claims outrun the evidence?

Because a true premise (mycotoxins exist and can be harmful) is stretched into an unproven conclusion (your house mold is toxifying you), and that narrative sells tests, treatments, and services. We think you're better served by the honest version, even though it's less dramatic: mold in your home is worth removing for allergen, irritant, and building-health reasons that are well established — you don't need the contested toxicity story to justify acting.
