A moisture map is the difference between drying what looks wet and drying what is wet. Crews use meters, thermal imaging, room diagrams, and repeat readings to show where moisture traveled: under flooring, behind baseboards, inside wall cavities, below ceilings, and into adjacent rooms.
The map matters because water rarely respects the visible stain. A dishwasher leak may run under cabinets before it shows at the toe kick. A roof opening may wet insulation two rooms away. Drying equipment placed from a moisture map targets the actual wet assemblies instead of the obvious ones.
On claims, the moisture map is also evidence. It explains why equipment was placed, why materials came out, and when the structure reached dry standard. Without it, the scope reads like opinion.
A real moisture map is built from repeat visits, not a single reading. Crews establish a dry standard from unaffected materials of the same type, then log daily readings at marked points until affected assemblies return to that baseline. The pattern of those readings tells the story: numbers falling on schedule mean the drying plan is working; a point that plateaus means trapped moisture — time to open the assembly, adjust equipment, or switch methods.
If a company dries your home without showing you readings, ask for them. 'It looks dry' is how cupped hardwood and spring mold problems start; documented dry-standard verification is how they're prevented.
